Conservation CenterAbout the Conservation CenterThe Juming Museum is the largest outdoor museum in Taiwan. It displays 80% of its exhibits outdoors. This means they are subjected to the outdoor environment, which makes conservation a truly difficult task. Nevertheless, since the Museum’s collection is the core of its mission, the preservation and conservation thereof remain an important aspect. For this reason, the Conservation Center was established in 2007 as an important unit dedicated to the conservation of Ju Ming’s works.
The main operation of the Center is the conservation of the Museum’s collection, but it also takes on conservation projects for large outdoor, metal artworks that have been authenticated by the NPO Juming Culture and Education Foundation’s Authentication Center as originals by Ju Ming. We engage in the development of and pertinent research in conservation technology for three-dimensional artworks, including 3D digital preservation of our collection and the applications thereof, research and development of anti-rust technology for metals in the outdoors, establishment of a database of the artistic materials used by Ju Ming, research and development the monitoring system of the conservation environment, etc. We have accumulated years of practical experience in three-dimensional artwork conservation, as well as fruitful results of conservation research.
Art conservation involves a wide spectrum of disciplines, ranging from environmental science, materials science, chemistry and physics on the scientific end, to aesthetics, history and art on the humanistic end. Taking a multidisciplinary approach, the Conservation Center collaborates and interacts with experts and scholars in various fields. We combine professional knowledge and skills in the work of conserving three-dimensional artworks, so as to promote correct concepts of such work. We also seek to realize the sharing of resources across the conservation community in Taiwan and abroad, and to become a specialized unit of three-dimensional artwork conservation.
